Almquist Building HistoryThe structure was built in 1922 by Oscar Almquist, an area leader in concrete and public building construction. Currently the building has 11,000 usable square feet on 2 floors. It's vintage elevator is used to move car frames, rolling chassis and parts for fabrication and final assembly. Almquist, a Swedish immigrant, also built Central City's present middle school, Hards Memorial Library, the Presbyterian church as well as several other buildings across Nebraska, Kansas and several other midwest states.
The Almquist building in Central City was originally designed to take advantage
of the ease of obtaining supplies and shipping with its proximity to the
Union Pacific right-of-way and the Lincoln
Highway. Almquist intended to house his burgeoning contracting business
and auto dealerships to promote the sale of personal automobiles. The structure was originally designed for 6 stories, however the economic conditions in the mid-20's and the stock market crash of 1929 left the building in its present 2-story elevation. Over the years the building has housed the Almquist-Dorrance Paint Company, Almquist Auto Company, Oakland Automobile headquarters, T.B. Hord Grain operations, and a farm implement dealership. The building was last occupied in 1977 by a Pontiac dealership until we began our loving restoration in late 2003.
